How to style your outdoor family session?

We all know the deal with the British weather. You book an outdoor shoot for a Saturday in April, hoping for spring sunshine, and wake up to grey skies and a bit of a chill. It’s a classic Leicester scenario!

But here is a secret from a photographer with over a decade of experience: Overcast days are actually amazing for photography. Bright, midday sun can cause harsh shadows and squinting eyes. Cloud cover acts as a giant natural softbox, giving us beautiful, even, and flattering light.

So, don’t panic about the forecast. Instead, focus on what you can control: the styling.

What to Wear for a UK Outdoor Shoot The key to looking great (and staying happy) in outdoor photos is comfort and layers. If the kids are cold, they won’t be smiling.

Layer Up with Texture: Think chunky knit cardigans, denim jackets, scarves, and gilets. These add lovely texture to the photos and make the images feel “cosy” and emotive. Plus, if the sun does come out, you can easily shed a layer.

Coordinate, Don’t Match: Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white t-shirts and jeans. It can look a bit dated. Instead, pick a palette. Earth tones work beautifully outdoors—think mustard yellows, deep burgundies, navys, and forest greens.

Appropriate Footwear: If we are heading to Bradgate Park or a local woodland, leave the stilettos at home. Wellington boots or smart leather boots look fantastic in outdoor settings and allow us to explore without worrying about mud.

Embrace the Chaos Finally, don’t worry if the wind blows your hair or a drizzle starts. Some of my favourite family portraits feature windswept hair and rosy cheeks. It’s real, it’s natural, and it captures the spirit of your family perfectly.
